The first time it happened, I honestly thought my laptop was just being slow again, maybe it because many unnecessary apps that i installed.

I clicked the DaVinci Resolve icon, the splash screen showed up then the loading bar moved a bit.

Then… gone.

Thats no error message, no warning att all, just back to the desktop like nothing happened.

At first, I didn’t even realize it was crashing. I thought maybe I double-clicked too fast or Windows was lagging, then I tried again, but Same thing happen! Splash screen, then poof.

That’s when I realized something was wrong.

My Laptop Setup (Nothing Fancy)

Before going further, here’s the real my pc setup.

This wasn’t a powerful editing machine. Not even close.

  • Windows 10
  • 4GB RAM
  • Intel integrated graphics

Old laptop, HDD, nothing upgraded

I wasn’t trying to edit a movie or anything crazy. I just wanted to open DaVinci Resolve and see if it could run at my old pc.

Spoiler: it didn’t.

What the Crash Felt Like

The most annoying part wasn’t the crash itself. It was how silent it was.

No crash report

No “not responding” message

No hint about what went wrong

Resolve would start loading, then instantly close. Every single time.

If you’re on a low-end PC, this kind of thing messes with your head. You don’t know if:

The app is broken or no

Windows is the problem

or your laptop just can’t handle it at all

At that point, I was close to uninstalling it and giving up.

Why DaVinci Resolve Hates Low RAM at Startup

After a lot of trial and error, one thing became clear.

DaVinci Resolve uses a lot of memory right at startup.

  • Not when editing.
  • Not when rendering.
  • Right at launch.

On a 4GB RAM system, Windows is already using a big chunk just to exist. Add background apps, drivers, and services, and there’s barely any room left.

So when Resolve tries to load:

  • GPU processes
  • media cache
  • UI elements

…it runs out of memory before you even see the main screen.

Instead of showing an error, it just closes.

The One Fix That Actually Worked for Me

I tried many things. Most of them did nothing.

But one change finally stopped the startup crash.

I increased virtual memory (pagefile) properly

I had ignored this before because people always talk about it like it’s optional.

On a 4GB RAM laptop, it’s not optional.

Here’s what I did (nothing fancy):

  • Opened Advanced system settings
  • Went to Performance → Virtual Memory
  • Set a custom size

I didn’t disable anything. I didn’t try to be clever.

I simply gave Windows more breathing room.

After restarting the laptop, I opened DaVinci Resolve again.

This time, it didn’t crash.

It loaded slowly. Very slowly.
But it opened.

That alone felt like a win.

Things I Tried That Didn’t Help Much

Before finding the pagefile fix, I went through the usual suggestions.

Some helped a little. Some didn’t help at all.

Closing background apps

It helped reduce RAM usage, but Resolve still crashed on startup.

Reinstalling DaVinci Resolve

Did nothing. Same crash, same behavior.

Updating GPU drivers

Good idea in general, but it didn’t fix the startup issue.

Running as administrator

No difference.

These steps aren’t useless, but on a 4GB RAM system, they weren’t enough.

Small Tweaks That Made It More Stable

Once Resolve finally opened, I still had to be careful.

A few small habits made a difference.

I stopped opening other apps

No browser tabs. No Discord. No file explorer windows.

Resolve was the only thing running.

I avoided heavy projects

Simple timelines only. Low-resolution footage. No fancy effects.

I accepted the limits

Playback wasn’t smooth. Scrubbing lagged. But at least the app stayed open.

Is DaVinci Resolve Worth Using on 4GB RAM?

Honestly? i think Not really.

But sometimes you don’t have a choice.

If you’re just testing, learning, or opening small projects, it can work barely with the right setup.

If you plan to edit seriously on a low-end PC, you’ll hit limits fast.

This fix didn’t make my laptop powerful.
It just stopped DaVinci Resolve from crashing instantly.

And sometimes, that’s all you need.

When an Upgrade Is the Only Real Answer

After spending time with Resolve on this laptop, one thing became obvious.

4GB RAM is the minimum just to open it.
Not to work for it.

If you can:

you’ll save yourself a lot of frustration.

But if you’re stuck with what you have, increasing virtual memory is the one thing that gave me a chance to use Resolve at all.

Final Thoughts

When DaVinci Resolve crashes on startup on a 4GB RAM laptop, it’s usually not a bug.

Windows is already struggling, and Resolve pushes it over the edge before it even opens.

This fix didn’t turn my laptop into a video editing machine.
It didn’t make things fast.

It just made the app open — and stay open.

And on a low-end PC, that’s sometimes the best outcome you can hope for.
